Reggie Farmer Coppersmithing

Traditional and Contemporary Hand Hammered Copperware

My work is hand hammered copper weare made from 16 gauge sheet metal. I use the ancient techniques of bossing, where the metal is hand hammered into hardwood stumps; raising, where the metal is hammered over forming heads and dollies; and the shot bag, where the metal is hammered into a leather bag filled with shot or sand. Next the metal is planished (smoothed) on an air powered planishing hammer to remove the shrink and stretch marks. Then the surface of the metal is left as raw copper or prepared with a buffed-mirror, satin, brushed, or hammer toned finish. Through extensive research and experimentation I have developed patination techniques where the metal is treated with various chemicals to produce exotic combinations of colors, patterns, textures and finishes. Finally, the piece is sealed with acrylic lacquer to protect it. Blending ancient metal forming techniques with modern technology I produce unique one-of-a-kind works of art.

Betsey VonDreele

Textile Collage

My work has always included textiles, whether designing for liturgical uses, weaving or quilting. It has evolved, however, into small, finely crafted textile landscapes, influenced by the textures of the land and seashore. Scraps of fabric, natural materials, and yarns are frayed, folded, manipulated and then hand sewn and fused into collages which evoke the moods of the landscapes in which I live or have visited. The layers of fabric, working from the landscape’s horizon line forward, are built up to create a 3rd dimension. While my work is derived from a craft technique, it crosses the line of craft into the world of landscape art. Viewed from a distance the work is often mistaken for painting, a trick of the eye which is revealed upon close examination of the details.
