Sun Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company Records

Collection abstract: The Sun Shipbuilding Company was incorporated in 1916 as a Sun Company subsidiary, and was located in Chester, Pennsylvania, on the Delaware River. During World War II, Sun Ship was one of the nation's largest private shipyards and single biggest producer of oil tankers. The records include letter and order books from Robert Wetherill & Company describing the building and marketing of the firm's stationary steam engines. Also included are treasurer's reports, technical, engineering, and design reports, correspondence and photographs relating to the oil tankers and other vessels produced by Sun Ship between 1918 and 1980. Files also document the sale of Sun Ship to the Levingston Shipbuilding Company in 1982.
