Introduction
Technology and the Civil War is a digital exhibit conceived and created by graduate students from the University of Virginia under the direction of the Hagley Museum and Library and Bernie Carlson, professor in the Department of Science, Technology, and Society at UVA.
The exhibit is divided into three modules: Gunpowder, Iron, and Railroads. Each of these modules use case studies to explore the larger issues around each of these technologies and their importance during the American Civil War. Included within each narrative are digital documents primarily from the collection at the Hagley Library. The exhibit also incorporates items from other institutions.
The Hagley Library welcomes comment about the site and we hope to use it as a basis for future digital collaborations with schools, universities, and other community groups. Please contact kmartin@hagley.org for more information.
