Conservation Internship

Hagley Museum and Library
Library Conservation Department
2023 Summer Internship

The Project
Hagley Library’s Conservation Department is seeking to employ a conservation intern for the summer of 2023. The project will focus on examining, documenting, and housing artifacts created by industrial designer Thomas Lamb (1896-1988). The items are some of the important universal design products developed by Lamb in the mid 2Oth century, representing his efforts to improve consumer goods and accessibility. Under the Library Conservator's and Museum Conservator's direction, the intern will assess the condition of various handle prototypes and models, identify metals and plastics, summarize appropriate storage materials and treatment methods, and implement housing recommendations. The artifacts include mock-ups, molds, and casts in plaster, wax, clay, and metal, as well as wood, leather, and plastic.

Duties will include:
•    Evaluate objects’ condition and prepare condition reports.
•    Document select/representative items with photography.
•    Select and design custom housing materials and solutions.
•    Assist with development of treatment recommendations.
•    Clean corrosion material from metals, after consultation with Museum Conservator.
Qualifications
The intern should, at a minimum, have experience handling and using archives or museum collections. Experience or training in art conservation (undergraduate or graduate) and identifying preservation needs is preferred.

Terms
Summer internships at Hagley typically entail 280 hours of service, with start and end dates set by mutual agreement. The rate is $18 per hour. Applications will be reviewed from March 15, 2023, until filled. Hagley Museum and Library is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer. Women, minorities, people with disabilities, and veterans are strongly encouraged to apply.
