Unique Styling of 1950s’ Automobiles Celebrated at Hagley’s Annual Car Show

Thursday, July 13, 2017

Take a step back in time as the Hagley Car Show returns on Sunday, September 17, 2017, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The show will feature more than 500 antique and restored cars, trucks, and motorcycles that date from the early 1900s through the 1980s. The Special Feature this year is “Distinctively Different: Styling in the 1950s,” which showcases cars from the golden era of car design and production in the United States.

The 1950s’ car culture is unparalleled by any other decade, and this year’s car show theme will celebrate the unique aspects manufacturers began using at that time. There were many innovations in design and safety, and the ‘50s gave birth to several highly prized classic cars. The jet set lifestyle had captured the hearts of the American public and designers of the time leaped on the chance to exploit this fascination.

“In the 1950s, we started to see cars with unique and unforgettable features like wings, turbines, and after-burner tail lights. America was entering the Space Age at the time, and this was also reflected in car styles. Cars featured large tailfins, lots of chrome, and flowing designs that echoed the look of rockets,” says John McCoy, event chairman and Hagley’s curator of mechanical exhibitions. “This year’s theme for the Hagley Car Show offers our visitors a great opportunity to explore these unique and priceless pieces of automotive history.”

Visitors to the car show will enjoy vehicle parades, a vintage juke box display, video simulators, pedal car racing, and a festival food court. The show will take place in the area surrounding the first du Pont home, garden, and barn.

The Hagley Car Show is presented by Glenmede. Assistance is also provided by the following car clubs: The Brandywine Region of the Antique Automobile Club of AmericaChester County Antique Car ClubThe Historical Car Club of PennsylvaniaHistorical Vintage Car Club of Delaware, First State Corvair Club, and The First State Mustang and Ford Club.
