May is Teacher Appreciation Month at Hagley!
Hagley is celebrating National Teacher Appreciation Day (May 6, 2008) by offering free museum admission for educators and their families during the entire month of May. Simply present your school identification and receive complimentary admission for you and up to three family members. Come see all we have to offer you, your family, and your students for free!

Exhibit Reception for Members -
Join us as we celebrate the opening of “Give It Your Best: Workplace Posters in the United States.” Invitations will be mailed in early April. This exhibit will feature more than seventy posters from the collections of the Hagley Museum and Library. The posters were printed to improve morale and bolster productivity and are also colorful and striking examples of graphic art. The exhibit spans from 1917 through World War II. Displayed posters will include Joseph Pennell’s World War I poster “That Liberty Shall Not Perish,” the Seagram Corporation’s “Loose Lips Might Sink Ships,” and Norman Rockwell’s “Four Freedoms.” On Saturdays at 2, 3, and 4 p.m., volunteers will give a fifteen-minute exhibit tour. Exhibit only admission is $5 for adults, $2 for children six through fourteen, and free for children five and under. Exhibit included in regular admission. Free for members. Conference at Hagley: Commonplace Yet Extraordinary: Design Histories of Everyday Objects
The Center for the History of Business, Technology, and Society hosts this conference on the histories of design processes that created everyday objects, such as appliances, tools, equipment, and miscellaneous things commonly used in homes, offices, factories, and public spaces. Hagley's Creek Kids: Mothers and Daughters at Hagley

Experience the social and family life of women in the nineteenth century. Activities include making ice cream and lemonade the nineteenth-century way, a ladies' tea, paper doll and paper fan making, and an assortment of indoor and outdoor nineteenth-century games. Wilmington Trust Presents Fireworks at Hagley
Hagley presents a pyrotechnic masterpiece that weaves together a story illustrated through music, narration, aerial shells, and intricate set pieces. Must be a member of Hagley to purchase tickets. Hagley Car Show
Browse through more than 600 antique and restored cars that date from the early nineteen-hundreds to the nineteen-eighties. The show features vehicle parades, motoring music, video and go cart racing, and a festival food court. Activities are on Hagley’s upper property. Adults $7, Children 6-14 $4. Free for members. Parking will be in the Barley Mill Plaza.

NOTE: Registration for those interested in showing vehicles at the car show will begin April 1. At that time, the registration form will be available by mail and posted on the website.

Golden Pheasants Harvest Party 
This Saturday afternoon event is perfect for the young and young-at-heart and their families.  Enjoy hayrides, live blue grass band, food catered by the Wilmington Club, pumpkin carving demonstrations, and games.  Costs are $30 for adult members (21 and older), $40 for nonmember adults, $15 for young adults (15-20), $5 for youths (5-14), and children under 4 are free. Fall Lecture Series: Kevin Borg
Kevin Borg will discuss his recent work, Auto Mechanics: Technology and Expertise in the Twentieth-Century America, in the Copeland Room of the Hagley Library. This is the first book to explore the history of the auto mechanic shop. Borg traces the evolution of this profession within the context of class, race and gender and discusses how vocational education related to the unique expertise of the mechanic. The lecture will be followed with a question and answer session as well as book sales and signing by the author. Lecture is free and open to the public. Fall Lecture Series: Nicholas D. Lowry

Nicholas D. Lowry, President of the Swann Auction Galleries in New York, will discuss posters as an art form in the Copeland Room of Hagley Library. This lecture will complement our newly installed exhibit on incentive posters entitled: Give It Your Best! Workplace Posters in the United States. Lowry will talk about the history, process and market, past and present, for such practical works of art. The lecture will be followed with a question and answer. Conference at Hagley: Automobility, the 100th Anniversary of the Model T
The Center for the History of Business, Technology, and Society organizes and administers the Hagley Museum and Library’s interaction with the world of scholarship. Its efforts are designed to bring attention to Hagley’s research collections and to generate intellectual dialogue at Hagley. The focus of this conference is the impact of motor vehicles in America since 1908. “The Uncommon Man”
Hagley Soda House auditorium
Join Hagley for a film produced by the Atomic Heritage Foundation about the life of Crawford Greenewalt. In 1959, Crawford Greenewalt wrote: ”The story of America is the story of common men who were inspired to uncommon levels of accomplishment.” No one fits that description better than its author. The son of a physician, Greenewalt rose to incredible heights. A key figure in the Manhattan Project, Greenewalt also made major contributions to chemical engineering, ran the DuPont Company, and published a definitive study of the world’s hummingbirds. The film tells the story of his amazing life. A reception will follow the lecture.

Fall Lecture Series: David Kirsch

David Kirsch will discuss his book on automobiles, The Electric Vehicle and the Burden of History, in the Copeland Room of the Hagley Library. In Kirsch’s study, the relationship of technology, society and the environment are considered as he explains why the gasoline engine became the dominant propulsion device of electric engines. Here we see that a given technology’s superiority over another cannot be determined without social context. The lecture will be followed with a question and answer session as well as book sales and signing by the author. Lecture is free and open to the public. Fall Lecture Series: Barksdale Maynard
Barksdale Maynard will discuss his book, Buildings of Delaware, in the Copeland Room of Hagley Library. His book is part of the Buildings of the United States series published by the Society of Architectural Historians and the University Press of Virginia. This lecture will present a landscape very familiar to the citizens of Delaware and in the surrounding counties of Pennsylvania and Maryland and offer insight into the history and changing facades of many important buildings in the state.
