How To Get Kids Into STEM

How To Get Kids Into STEM

A good foundation in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) is an important part of a well-rounded education for any student in the modern world. Still, encouraging an interest in STEM or finding engaging STEM programs for kids is often easier said than done.

Fortunately, with the right techniques and tools, cultivating enthusiasm for STEM in kids doesn't have to be a hardship (for you or for them!). Here, we've outlined a few crucial principles for helping kids cultivate an interest in STEM, as well as some ideas for STEM activities for kids.

  • Make real-world connections. Real-life illustrations of STEM principles are everywhere, making it easy to draw connections between the concepts kids are learning and their application in the world around them. For example, you might use cooking to illustrate different types of chemical reactions, or create a mock "oil spill" by mixing oil and water, and challenging kids to clean it up with different materials.

  • Encourage invention. Many of the most impactful advances in STEM to date were born of a question or a need. Challenge kids to think of their own invention to solve an everyday problem or need they face, or look up invention ideas for kids and try them out at home with your child.

  • Introduce them to STEM role models. Sometimes, learning about real-life people who have made contributions to the world of STEM can help make innovation more exciting, and encourage kids to pursue careers in STEM. Resources like Hagley's Nation of Inventors exhibit are great places to teach kids about the power of innovation and how to be an inventor.

The mission of Hagley Museum and Library is to foster innovation and inspiration through our historical collections. Located on the site of E.I. du Pont's gunpowder works, Hagley's offerings include a library dedicated to the study of American business and technology, a unique patent model collection, and the restored historical mill and workers' community, as well as the home and gardens of the du Pont family. Hagley also hosts a variety of events intended to educate and engage the wider community. Plan your visit today, or consider donating to support our work!
