Collect and Recycle Broken Appliances

Throughout the Year
Non-functioning appliances are needed for the Hagley Invention Convention, where children explore how things are put together.  Collect approved items throughout the year and bring to Hagley in January 2013.  You must pre-register your group before collecting to receive the list of approved items and non-accepted items.  Great project for scout groups, high school clubs, or business groups. Fireworks Clean Up

June 17, 24, 2013

Monday's after show 9am-noon and/or 1-4pm
Join Hagley staff in collecting fireworks pieces in the E. I. du Pont garden and surrounding area.  Wear gloves and closed toe shoes.  You may sign up individually or as a group.  You must pre-register for this activity. Supervisor: Horticultural Specialist

Junior Creek Kids

Junior Creek Kids are sixth through ninth graders who volunteer to help out on Creek Kids program days.  These volunteers work closely under the leadership of the older Creek Kids and mentors to help support the programming developed by the Creek Kids.  The application process will begin in March 2013 for the summer of 2013 events.  Supervisor: Museum Educator

Creek Kids Youth Leadership Program

Applications accepted in the fall.

The Creek Kids Youth Leadership Program is for high school students with a passion for history and learning. These students work throughout the year to research, plan, and implement events for the summer.  Along the way, Creek Kids learn leadership and life skills to help them be successful after graduation.  Hagley will be accepting applications for 2013-2014.  If you are interested in applying to the Creek Kid Youth Leadership Program, click here to download the application packet.  Please note that completed applications are due in the fall, and must include the Leadership Application, one Reference Form, and signed Creek Kid and Parent Contract.  The leadership Application may be submitted electronically, but the Reference Form and Creek Kid and Parent Contract must be submitted via fax or mail.  Please note that participation in the Creek Kids Youth Leadership Program is limited; unfortunately, not all applications may be accepted into the program. 90+ volunteer hours. January 2014
Invention Convention (15+ years old)

(Saturday, Sunday, and Monday) 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Invention Convention allows children and their parents to celebrate the secrets and solutions of inventions with a variety of hands-on science activities. Volunteers work with the public, organize and restock supplies, and enjoy participating in the learning process that occurs during the event. Volunteer positions are 3-4 hours in length. Supervisor: Education Coordinator

Admissions Assistants: You will greet visitors, provide them with event programs, direct visitors and help the admissions staff as needed.

Create an Invention: You will be asked either to hand out building materials, assist families with the invention process, or clean the area as needed.  Help tidy the area at the end of the day.

Catering assistant: You will be taking orders, taking money, giving change, and helping as needed to fill the orders of food (free lunch included).

Science Room:  Assist exhibitors as they carry and set up their science tables. At the slime table, help kids make slime they can take home. 

Hagley Store:  Staff members will be overseeing the booth and will give you instructions for the day. If you are on the afternoon shift on Monday you may be asked to stay longer to help pack up if you are available.

Green Team: You will be assisting staff move recycling items from the rooms to the recycling bins in the back of the building.  Wear gloves and something warm, as you will be moving from inside to outside throughout your time.  You are helping us be “green” and very environmentally friendly! 

Tinkering Tables:  You will collect a ticket from each child and give them one appliance/ piece of equipment in exchange for the ticket. Each child only receives one item to deconstruct. You may be asked to do any or all of the following:  hand out and collect tools, help people choose an appliance to take apart and possibly carry it to a table for them, float to see if guests need anything else, collect disassembled appliance parts for possible use in the Create an Invention activity, keep the area as clean and safe as possible and help tidy the area at the end of the day. If some visitors are staying too long in this area you can gently remind them that there are lots of other fun things to do.

 

E. I. du Pont Garden (15+ years old)

Monday-Friday, May-September
Volunteers assist in the maintenance of all trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, bulbs and vegetables in the restored garden at the du Pont family residence. Under the direct supervision of the Horticultural Specialist, volunteers plant, weed, water, fertilize, mulch, prune, and clean all areas of the restored garden and its surroundings. The work will take place in a public area, so there will be some contact with museum visitors. Wear closed toe shoes, gloves, hat, and bring a water bottle.  Time commitment: flexible within hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday. Supervisor: Horticultural Specialist

October 19, 20, 2013 (Saturday and Sunday)
Craft Fair (15+ years old)

This artisans' marketplace brings local and regional artisans known for excellence to Hagley. Shop for fine quality woodwork and furniture, fanciful garden sculptures, one-of-a-kind paintings, beautiful clothing, jewelry, pottery, and unique handmade crafts. Supervisor: Volunteer Coordinator

Hagley Store Booth: Assist store attendants with bagging purchases and monitoring displays. Last shift will help pack up at end of show.

Lunchtime Runners: Take lunch orders and deliver lunches to vendors who cannot leave their booths.

Caterer Assistant: You will be taking orders, taking money, giving change, and helping as needed to fill the orders of food (free lunch included).

Admissions Table: Volunteers put admission stickers on programs, hand out programs and raffle tickets, give instructions about the shuttle, and monitor visitors.

Greeter for the Easy Does It! Exhibit (16+ years old)

Welcome visitors into the interactive exhibit and encourage them to explore and try the different stations to learn about physics, science, and work in fun practical ways.  Help visitors experience simple machines we take for granted every day. Training takes about thirty minutes. You must enjoy talking with and listening to other people and be polite and confident in speaking to people.  You must also be able to occupy time with reading, handwork, or other activity if the visitation is slow that day. Time commitment: three and a half hours, one time per month, weekends or holidays, 1 to 4:30 p.m. Supervisor: Volunteer Coordinator

Join our Earth Day, Arbor Day, May Day celebration. We are looking for volunteers for NatureFest, a new family program focused on celebrating and preserving the natural world!  Volunteers are needed for a variety of crafts and activities that examine nature in a fun, hands-on way.  Volunteers should be comfortable interacting with a wide variety of ages, from very young kids to grandparents.  Supervisor: Museum Educator

June 14 & 21, 2013 (June 15, 16 & 22, 23 are rain dates)
Fireworks Shows (16+ years old)
This annual members-only event is an evening of fireworks, picnics, music, and fun. This program offers members a spectacular show at a reasonable cost. By volunteering to assist with this special event, you can enjoy the fireworks show for free. Volunteers must be available on raindates as well.  Volunteers must be able to walk on grassy uneven surfaces.  Supervisor: Membership Coordinator

 

Wristband Monitor: Check wristbands on people and put parking passes on cars at entrance to Hagley.

Store Booth: Sell items at store booth tent.

Hawkers: Roam through the crowd selling items such as glow-in-the-dark sticks.

Kid Central Activity Assistants: Assist children with games in the kid-friendly area.

Fairy and Fairy assistant: We provide the costume, you provide the personality.  Sprinkle children with "fairy dust" and help them write wishes to put on a tree.

Summer Camp Teen Counselors (16-18 years old)
June 24-28, July 8-12, July 29-August 2, 2013

Hagley Museum's summer camps are unique learning adventures, integrating history, science, and the arts. Children enjoy experiencing something completely new to them every day! Each group of fifteen children is led by two adults and three teen counselors. Counselors work approximately thirty-five hours per week (8 a.m. to 3 p.m.) during one or more weeks and have a wide variety of responsibilities, including: supervising children and keeping an eye out for their safety, setting up and cleaning up materials for various activities, helping children complete crafts and participate in activities, carrying the first aid kit, and providing general support to the instructors. Counselors must attend one day of training prior to the start of summer camp.

Car Show (16+ years old)
Hundreds of cars on the general show field will reflect the variety of makes and models that are a part of automotive history. Enjoy music, vehicle parades, and a food court. Supervisor: Volunteer Coordinator

Admission Wristband Assistant: Help visitors put their admission wristband on.

Activity Assistants: Assist guests with the use of various equipment; monitor lines. Activities include pedal car relays race course and video racing.

Catalog Filing Quality Control (18+ years old)

Responsibilities include checking that trade catalogs and pamphlets in our collection are filed in the proper order.  This will help locate items that have been "missing" because they may be in the incorrect location.  Involves moving small boxes of materials onto a cart, sitting at a desk to check order.  Training in correct library filing order will be given.  Must have attention to detail and ability to examine complex filing for correctness.  This helps scholars by making these rare materials accessible.  Time commitment: flexible within staff working hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays. Supervisor: Head of Imprints

Collections Inventory Volunteer (18+ years old) - CURRENTLY FILLED

Hagley Museum and Library seeks experienced volunteers to help with the Museum collections inventory project. This is a part-time, volunteer position to last one year and to begin now. Training will take place upon acceptance.  These volunteers will assist the department in completing a comprehensive inventory of all objects at Hagley.  By locating every object, computerizing the records, and recording digital photographs, the collection will be easily accessible for searches, research, future exhibits, and the development of a preservation plan.  It will provide expedient searches and give accurate information about prioritizing preservation work.  Assisting with the location and number verification of Museum collections throughout storage. Assisting with the photography of Museum collections as necessary for the project. Recording information as it is retained including completing condition report forms as necessary. Helping to move and lift objects up to 50 pounds according to museum standards. Working in secure storage areas. Other duties as required for the collections inventory project. The ability to lift (no more than 50 lbs.), kneel, stand, squat and bend easily as well read very small print and be comfortable on ladders.  Knowledge of museum object and historic property handling techniques. Familiarity with museum collections database use, experience with Vernon CMS a plus. Ability and familiarity with the use of digital photography equipment and techniques. Knowledge of museum nomenclature as it pertains to description and condition of objects. Knowledge of computer programs which include Microsoft Office, Lightroom, Excel. Knowledge of history, material culture, and museum experience preferred. Must be able to commit to a regular schedule of 5 hours a day (between 9am-3pm with a hour lunch break and other breaks included), once a week, Monday-Thursday. Must pass a routine criminal background check.

Cutting Garden (18+ years old) - CURRENTLY FILLED

Responsibilities include pulling weeds, planting perennials, planting annuals, deadheading flowers, digging holes, laying down mulch, and any other needed gardening activity. Wear comfortable clothes and something you don't mind getting dirty. Time commitment: flexible within staff working hours of 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays. Supervisor: Horticultural Associate

Flower Arrangers (18+ years old)
Volunteers assist in flower and plant arranging in principal buildings as well as special events. Routine checking, refreshing, and watering of flower and plant arrangements. Flower arrangers work in the residence building and are supervised by a Hagley staff person. Time commitment: Mondays from 9 to 11 a.m., as many time

Greenhouse and Gardens (18+ years old) - CURRENTLY FILLED

May-September

Do you have a green thumb or want to cultivate one?  Join our staff in the greenhouse.  You'll help by planting, transplanting seedlings, and washing pots inside.  Outside work may include pulling weeds, planting, deadheading flowers, digging holes, laying down mulch, and any other needed gardening activity. Wear comfortable clothes and something you don't mind getting dirty. Extra plants may become yours in this role.  Time commitment: flexible within staff working hours of 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays. Handwork Group (18+ years old) January-October
Volunteers participate in various handwork projects: quilting, knitting, etc. Money raised through the sale of their completed projects goes toward scholarships for students attending educational programming. Time commitment: flexible, you may come as you are available on Mondays at 10am. Supervisor: Volunteer Coordinator

Historical Researcher (18+ years old) - CURRENTLY FILLED

If you enjoy learning new things and searching for information in the archives, library, and other historical sources, this is for you.  Topics to research include 1800s food (popcorn, coffee, etc.), life activities (chores, laundry, etc.), education, and others.  Time commitment:  flexible according to your schedule. Supervisor: Volunteer Coordinator

Imprints Department (18+ years old)
Volunteers who love books and/or are familiar with libraries, including shelf reading and re-housing of collections, will enjoy this area. Volunteers should enjoy detail-oriented tasks and have an interest in fascinating material. This may be a perfect opportunity for chasing the winter blues or summer work in a cool library. Time commitment: flexible within staff working hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays. Supervisor: Head, Imprints

Library Cataloging (18+ years old)

Assist our librarians with original cataloging.  You must have some library skills or experience and know the basics of original cataloging on the computer (AACR2, MARC records, etc.).  This is a great volunteer opportunity to add to a resume for someone starting out in the library field.  Time commitment: flexible within staff working hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays. Machine Shop Historical Interpreter (18+ years old)

Are you a good storyteller? Are you a history enthusiast? Do you enjoy meeting and talking to interesting people from around the world?  Volunteer as a historical interpreter.  Share your passion for history and provide visitors with a memorable experience.  Welcome visitors. Share the history of the Machine Shop and related themes. Give demonstrations by safely operating machinery in shop. Provide hands-on activities as appropriate and trained (drill press and pedal lathe). Wear required outfit (jeans, blue denim/chambray button up, short sleeve shirt, dark colored shoes).

Requirements: 9am-4pm; 1-3 days a month. Enjoy talking with and listening to people. Enjoy sharing information in a pleasant and accurate manner. Good public speaking skills. Flexibility. Ability to occupy time with reading, handwork, or other activity when visitation is slow. Walking, standing, ability to climb stairs. Assignments are indoors, but not air conditioned. Be able to operate the machinery and kerosene lamps (training provided).  Supervisor: Volunteer Coordinator

Manuscripts Department (18+ years old) - CURRENTLY FILLED
Volunteers who are detailed and enjoy organizing like this area. Sort and arrange volumes and files in alphabetical and numerical order; place materials in archival file folders, and transcribe file information. An interest or familiarity with the Wilmington-Newark-West Chester-Chester area and its geography, particularly in the early to mid-1900s, would be a plus.  If you enjoy computer work, this is for you. Download electronic records from the Library of Congress catalog into Hagley's online catalog. This project requires an eye for detail, patience and good computer skills. Supervisor: Curator of Manuscripts & Archives

Membership Office (18+ years old)
Volunteers assist staff members at special events by promoting and selling memberships. Time commitment: at special events as needed. Supervisor: Membership Coordinator

Museum Collections Department (18+ years old)
Volunteers are needed to help document and preserve Hagley's historic objects collection (fine and decorative arts, clothing and textiles, patent models and items related to women inventors; DuPont consumer products from gunpowder cans to modern synthetics). Persons with varied talents such as basic administrative skills, inventory, cataloging, research, photography, and sewing (on-call basis) experience are highly desirable. Those with the stamina to lift and move heavy objects are also needed. Those interested should be detail oriented, organized, dependable, and enjoy working in a collegial environment. Time commitment: two to four hours per week, weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Supervisor: Museum Registrar

Pictorial Collections Department (18+ years old) - CURRENTLY FILLED
Volunteers work on identifying photographs, entering information describing them in a database, and scanning prints to create digital images for presentation on the Hagley Digital Archives website. Knowledge of local and industrial history and/or photograph scanning preferred, but not required. Time commitment: flexible hours, but a minimum commitment of 3 hours per week required during staff working hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays or the second Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Supervisor: Pictorial Archivist

 

Public Relations/Marketing Assistance (18+ years old) - CURRENTLY FILLED
Join the bustling and exciting Publicity and Marketing work at Hagley.  Help us keep up with an ever-growing list of publicity and publicity opportunities.  You will need to be comfortable using a computer, and will work closely with the Marketing Manager and Marketing Assistant. You will assist in maintaining the publicity database, and post events on web sites, create lists for direct mailings and email blasts, and perform clerical work.  Your efforts will inform the public of upcoming events and/or exhibits at Hagley and track the results of the publicity outreach.  Time commitment: one to two times per week, for at least four hours per day.  For training purposes, must be available Monday, Wednesday, or Friday for at least the first month. Supervisor: Marketing Assistant and Marketing Manager

Workers' Garden (18+ years old) February-October
The workers' garden is an integral part of the interpretation of 19th Century life on Workers' Hill. The workers' garden is utilized during our summer youth camps, Summer in Industrial America tours, Creek Kids program, and special events. Volunteers are needed to plant and maintain the garden. Time commitment: flexible during daylight hours weekdays or weekends. Supervisor: Volunteer Coordinator

Workers' Hill Historical Interpreter (18+ years old)

Are you a good storyteller? Are you a history enthusiast? Do you enjoy meeting and talking to interesting people from around the world?  Volunteer as a historical interpreter.  Share your passion for history and provide visitors with a memorable experience.  Welcome visitors and provide information in the Gibbons House and Brandywine Manufacturers’ Sunday School. Share the history of the families who lived and worked in the 19th century industrial village with museum visitors.   Provide hands-on activities as appropriate and trained (write with quill pen, laundry, etc.) Wear required outfit (skirt made from approved fabric, white button up blouse, minimal jewelry, dark shoes).

Requirements: 11am-4:30pm; 1-3 days a month. Enjoy talking with and listening to people. Enjoy sharing information in a pleasant and accurate manner. Good public speaking skills. Flexibility. Ability to occupy time with reading, handwork, or other activity when visitation is slow. Walking, standing, ability to climb stairs. Assignments are indoors, but not air conditioned. Be able to operate the wood stove in the cooler times of the year and kerosene lamps (training provided). Be able to open/close windows.   Supervisor: Volunteer Coordinator

Membership Volunteers:  Greet visitors and let them know that Hagley has a membership program and to offer them a brochure.  You may want to let visitors know that if they join at the Household level, they will be able to visit more than 250 national and international museums for free (ASTC Program flyers will be available to hand out at the booth). 

Patent Office Assistant:You will be asked to hand out patent applications and pencils to children who want a Hagley patent.  Please explain that they need to submit a drawing of and a name for their invention in order to be approved for a patent, just as the U.S. Patent Office requires.  When they return it to you completed, praise it generously, put a gold sticker on the corner, and stamp the Hagley patent seal in the center of the gold sticker.  The children are allowed to take the patent and the invention home with them.

Floaters: Give people working a break and be available as needed.

Late Check-In: Assist people as they check in late.

Wristband Monitor: As vehicles approach, flag the first vehicle without a parking pass under the windshield wiper to the head of the line.  Position yourself one Wristband Monitor per vehicle.  Ask every person in the vehicle to hold up their wrist with the wristband on. If everything is in order, place the parking pass under the windshield wiper. Dogs are not allowed onto the property. Please be friendly to our guests, but do not stop and chat as this backs things up on the road and causes problems.

Wristband Monitor Coordinator: Keep traffic flowing and wristband monitors organized. See above.

Membership Raffle Booth: Assist attendees in buying raffle tickets and selling memberships.

Store Booth: Sell items at store booth tent.

Store Booth Hawkers: Walk through the crowd selling items such as glow-in-the-dark sticks.

Kid Central Activity Assistants: Assist children with games in the kid-friendly area.

Guests can bike along the most beautiful mile in the Brandywine Valley, hike around Hagley's history, or simply enjoy an outdoor evening excursion to Hagley. Supervisor: Manager of  Museum Operations

Safety Trail Assistants: (all positions are located outside)  Ensure guests remain on paths and in public areas.

Car Show (18+ years old)
Hundreds of cars on the general show field will reflect the variety of makes and models that are a part of automotive history. Enjoy music, vehicle parades, and a food court. Supervisor: Volunteer Coordinator

 

Greeters: Direct visitors to correct lines of payment.

Membership Assistants: Promote and sell memberships.

Admission Wristband Assistant: Help visitors put their admission wristband on.

Activity Assistants: Assist guests with the use of various equipment; monitor lines. Activities include pedal car relays race course and video racing.

Hagley Store Booth Assistants: Assist store attendants with bagging purchases and monitoring displays. Last shift will help pack up at end of show.

Traffic Assistant:  Direct visitors to appropriate parking areas and answer questions.

Hayrides (18+ years old)

Revel in Hagley's fall color and splendor.  Spend time in nature before winter arrives. Help visitors enjoy crafts and hayrides.  Supervisor: Museum Educator

 

Crafts: Help children with fall themed craft activities as they wait for the next hay ride.

Hayride List Keeper: Keep a list of visitors who want to ride and serve cider.

Hayride assistant: Be able to lift 25 lbs and ride on the wagon.  Put the ladder up and down at the beginning and end of each trip. 

October 19 & 20, 2013
Craft Fair (18+ years old)
This artisans' marketplace brings local and regional artisans known for excellence to Hagley. Shop for fine quality woodwork and furniture, fanciful garden sculptures, one-of-a-kind paintings, beautiful clothing, jewelry, pottery, and unique handmade crafts. Supervisor: Volunteer Coordinator

 

Catering Assistant: You will be taking orders, taking money, giving change, and helping as needed to meet the orders of visitors for food. 

Admissions: Assist with admissions by handing out programs and directing visitors.

Hagley Store Booth: Assist store attendants with bagging purchases and monitoring displays. Last shift will help pack up at end of show.

Membership: Promote and sell memberships.

Raffle Attendant: Monitor raffle and assist visitors.

Lunchtime Runner: Take lunch orders and deliver lunches to vendors who cannot leave their booths.

Holiday Wreath and Greens Making (18+ years old)
Volunteers are needed to help create holiday decorations (wreaths, garlands, and bows) used to decorate Hagley Museum for the holiday season.  8 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. Volunteer hours are very flexible. You can sign up to work one or all three days, work part of one day, or even stop by on your lunch hour. We appreciate any time you can give. Dress comfortably; bring shears and gloves if you have them. Pre-registration required.  Maximum 12 people daily.  Supervisor: Horticultural Associate
