The Importance of Informal STEM Learning

The Importance of Informal STEM Learning

When it comes to STEM subjects, the whole world is a classroom. Activities like spending time in nature, visiting zoos or museums, interacting with technology, and even cooking can be a great way to explore and understand STEM concepts from an entirely new angle.

These types of real-world learning experiences are called informal stem learning, and engaging in them can help kids build a strong, lasting relationship with STEM subjects.

The Benefits of an Informal Science Education

Kids of all ages can benefit from informal STEM learning opportunities. In particular, education professionals have linked STEM activities for kids with the following outcomes:

  • better grasp of the concepts and skills covered in the classroom

  • increased interest in and commitment to science learning

  • more positive attitudes toward science, which in turn can lead to a higher likelihood of pursuing a career in science

  • development of critical thinking and problem solving skills, which will serve children in all areas of their lives

Informal STEM learning experiences can benefit parents, too. Activities such as going to science centers or conducting at-home STEM experiments are a great way to spend quality time with children in a way that is both constructive and fun.

Hagley's Science Saturdays Offer Family-Friendly STEM Activities

At Hagley, we're committed to creating accessible, fun learning activities for visitors of all ages. Our weekly Science Saturday program gives kids a chance to participate in hands-on STEM activities that will allow them to explore real-world applications of scientific concepts. From the science of rainbows to the basics of coding to deep-dives into ocean biomes, Science Saturdays are designed to inspire kids' creativity and curiosity.

Science Saturdays are a drop-in event, allowing for better flexibility. Activities are free for Hagley members, or included for the normal cost of admission.

The mission of Hagley Museum and Library is to foster innovation and inspiration through our historical collections.
