Research Services

Hagley Library is excited to be open by appointment for daily research visits at the Soda House Reading Room. Before making an appointment, you can:  

Researchers requiring long-term access (longer than 2 days) are asked to coordinate their visit with Library reference staff via AskHagley@hagley.org rather than booking through our online system. If you are a researcher with special mobility needs, please let us know when booking an appointment so we can make accommodations. 

If you are ready to schedule an appointment, you may do so via our Online Bookings System

Once you have scheduled your appointment, you will receive an email confirmation.  If you do not receive a confirmation of your appointment, please contact us at askhagley@hagley.org

Please submit material requests at least one week in advance of your visit:

  • For Archival Collections (audiovisual and manuscript), please indicate all materials you plan to use when you book your appointment or send us a list of materials (Include Acc./Box number where available) to callslip@hagley.org.  
  • For Published Collections, you may submit call slips if you have a Research Card number. If you have not yet been assigned a Research Card number, please submit requests via email to callslip@hagley.org.

Current Soda House Reading Room Hours:

Monday to Thursday - 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Friday - 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. 

We are closed on most major holidays, with a two-week winter closure in late December.

Directions to the library

The Hagley Library and Soda House are located off Route 100 and Buck Road in Greenville, Delaware approximately 4 miles from downtown Wilmington.

Please Note: Our Manuscripts and Archives Department, is located in the Soda House, please follow signs accordingly when you arrive on our property. If you are unsure where you are supposed to go please call us at (302) 658-2400.

Directions from Interstate 95

From 95 North: Take exit 8B and proceed on 202 north for approximately one mile to Route 141 south. Follow Route 141 south to the intersection with Route 100. Turn right onto Route 100 north. At the first stoplight make a right onto Buck Road East and follow the signs to library or Soda House.

From 95 South: Take exit 5B and proceed on 141 north. Follow 141 for approximately 7 miles. Turn left onto route 100 North. At the first stoplight make a right onto Buck Road East and follow the signs to the library or Soda House.

Directions from Route 202

Take Route 202 to Route 141 south. Follow Route 141 south to the intersection with Route 100. Turn right onto Route 100 north. At the first stoplight make a right onto Buck Road East and follow the signs to library or Soda House.

Directions from Route 52 (West Chester/Kennett Square)

Take Route 52 south and continue into Delaware. Shortly after the intersection with Route 82, you will pass a shopping center on your left. Stay in the left lane and watch for the intersection with Buck Road. Make a left at the light onto Buck Road. Go straight at the next traffic light (staying on Buck Road). After the stop sign, go straight through the gates and follow signs to the library or Soda House.

Access Restrictions

Hagley Museum and Library provides access to items in our collections for educational and research purposes. Access is granted in accordance with the terms of the Deed of Gift or Deposit Agreement and restrictions may apply, particularly for non-academic uses.

Visitors involved in research for current or potential litigation must contact the library in advance to obtain permission to access. Attorneys, or persons acting at the direction or under the supervision of an attorney, are reminded that failing to disclose the nature of your research, misrepresenting yourself or your involvement in current or potential litigation, or conducting unauthorized research, is a violation of the American Bar Association's Model Rules of Professional Conduct, which apply in all states, including Delaware.

Services for off-site researchers

Hagley staff offers limited research service for those unable to visit the library. This service is available for requests that require a minimal amount of research.

Hagley maintains a list of local researchers for hire if you require more comprehensive research. Please contact us at askhagley@hagley.org for more information.
