Rights and Reproductions Policy
The Hagley Museum and Library provides access to items in our collections for educational and research purposes. All reproductions are approved at the discretion of Hagley Museum and Library staff. Conservation concerns and staffing limitations are the most common reasons for declining reproduction requests. Hagley reserves the right to refuse reproduction requests if, in its judgment, a violation of copyright law or specific provisions in donor/depositor agreements would occur by approving such reproductions.
Hagley collection material may be photocopied, scanned, or digitally photographed with permission from the appropriate staff member. There may be a fee for use of the Library’s copying and scanning machines; Library staff will demonstrate proper use of these machines. Materials that are too fragile may not be reproduced. Improper copying of library materials may result in revocation of copying privileges.
Reproductions are to be used solely for private study, scholarship, or research. Possession of a physical or digital reproduction of a Hagley collection material does not constitute permission to publish, exhibit, distribute, or otherwise make available any content protected by copyright law except as may be permitted under copyright law exemptions such as fair use or public domain.
All responsibility for obtaining copyright permission to publish or reproduce Hagley collection material is assumed by the researcher. In many instances, Hagley does not hold the copyright to materials in its possession and cannot grant or deny permission to use them. For material for which copyright is retained by an active depositor, Hagley will endeavor to facilitate permission requests between the depositor and the researcher.
Regarding the public use of material for which Hagley holds the copyright, researchers must request and wait for the receipt of written permission from Hagley staff. Commercial use of Hagley collections is subject to site and publication fees and/or royalties. A credit line is required and should read: “Courtesy of Hagley Museum and Library.”
