History Hangout: Irving Shapiro and the Arab Boycott presented by Dr. Roger Horowitz

Thursday, April 30, 2020

We are excited to announce the first edition of our Hagley Hangout series with this talk by Dr. Roger Horowitz the Director of Center for the History of Business, Technology, and Society at the Hagley Library. The series came about as a way to virtually share Hagley’s incredible research collections, and the many stories they tell, while we wait out COVID-19.

Here is the description Roger provided about his talk titled "Protecting Israel: Irving Shapiro and the Arab Boycott:"

While CEO of the DuPont company and chair of the Business Roundtable, Irving Shapiro spearheaded efforts in the mid-1970s to cripple the Arab League boycott of Israel. His relationships with prominent business executives and leaders of America’s Jewish community allowed him to forge a consensus behind legislation passed by Congress in 1977 that fatally damaged the boycott. His role in doing so is not known but is outlined in this talk through the use of Shapiro’s personal papers held by the Hagley Library.

This series is part of our Hagley from Home initiative https://www.hagley.org/hagley-from-home
