Today's #WorkerWednesday post features Peggy Ward, a "yarn inspectress" at DuPont's nylon plant in Seaford, Delaware. She appeared on this May/June, 1953 issue of Better Living as part of a story about her experience working as a salesperson behind the hosiery counter of Strawbridge & Clothier's Wilmington, Delaware department store.
Better Living was a DuPont employee magazine created and published by the company's public relations department. The magazine, which began publication in 1946, featured the company's popular advertising slogan "Better Things for Better Living Through Chemistry."
In keeping with this branding, its issues featured photojournalistic essays celebrating DuPont products' contribution to improving American standards of living, features depicting DuPont employees at work and at leisure, updates on DuPont activities at home and abroad, and articles extolling free market values and the role of citizen-consumers in postwar America.
Hagley Library's holdings of Better Living are complete, and run from 1946 to 1972. You can also view them in full in our Digital Archive by clicking here.
