Nineteenth Century Day – Grade 6
Immerse your students in the daily life of a 19th century mill community. Through hands-on activities students connect with people from the past as they take on the roles of children, women, teachers, and powder yard workers who lived and labored along the Brandywine.
Students will compare and contrast life in the 21st century with life more than a hundred years ago to build empathy with and appreciation for the experiences of people during the Industrial Revolution. Activities are centered on Hagley’s Workers’ Hill community and in the historic powder yards.

Industrial America – Grades 6-8
Experience the rapid changes and innovation of the Industrial Revolution. The Hagley powder yards and mill communities were a microcosm of this era of technological growth and societal changes. Students on this walking tour discover the impact of mechanization, immigration, and American expansion through the eyes of real people who worked in and lived near the powder yards in the 1800s. Each student receives a biography of either a du Pont family member or mill worker and will actively participate as they visit sites throughout the powder yards.

Hidden Story Tour – Grades 6-8
Take a personalized tour through the historic DuPont powder yard along the beautiful Brandywine. Hear stories about nineteenth-century life and work and see demonstrations showcasing early industrial technology.

The Factory System Workshop – Grades 6-8
During this hands-on workshop, students learn about the development of the factory system during the Industrial Revolution. Every student gets a job on the production line as they learn about industry, the distribution of labor, and the power of teamwork.
