Two Conservators vs. Ten Foes
Prevention is at the heart of preservation. Be it a library book, a historic manuscript, or a cherished family photo, conservators at Hagley know they must identify and arrest ten common agents of deterioration. Every historic artifact or piece of artwork has different vulnerabilities, but almost nothing will remain in pristine condition without proper handling, display, and storage.
At this talk, Hagley staff members will review simple measures people can take to increase the longevity of objects. Excessive moisture, pests, light, and disassociation are a few of the ten agents of deterioration they will discuss.
Laura Wahl and Sharon Fickeissen—Hagley’s conservation specialists in photographs, books, and paper—will give an illustrated talk, with time set aside for Q&A. They can provide guidance for treasured works of art on paper, ephemera, photographs, or books that attendees intend to keep for future generations.
A couple of caveats: Hagley conservators are unable to provide treatment for damaged things that are privately owned but will guide attendees toward local qualified professionals. It is unethical for conservation professionals to provide monetary evaluations for collections. Instead, they will provide links to help attendees get in touch with appraisers, framers, storage material producers, or conservators to keep collections intact for years to come. They will also give guidance on what to look for when selecting a framer or conservator.
